How Dental Implants Improve Dentures

Jul 27 • 1 minute read

Those who are missing most or all of their teeth generally rely on dentures to restore function and aesthetics to their smile. Traditional adhesive based dentures may be an easy and relatively inexpensive option, however, they often slip out of place and cause irritation. They also don’t address an important underlying issue that accompanies tooth loss.

Implant-Supported Dentures

Dental implants are biocompatible posts or fixtures that are inserted into the jaw. They replace tooth roots and provide more natural and secure function. There are two ways to restore full arches of missing teeth with the support of dental implants:

Removable Overdentures – These are traditional dentures that are retained by at least two implant posts and are removable by the patient.

Permanent Hybrid Dentures – These are dentures that have been modified to fit strategically placed dental implants. Permanent dentures can only be removed by a dentist.

Benefits of Implant-Supported Dentures

Because the implant post is surgically placed into the jaw, it stimulates the bone just like a natural root does. As the fixture fuses with the jawbone, it promotes new bone growth and prevents resorption.

Resorption is a process in which jawbone mass is lost due to the lack of stimulation from tooth roots. Introducing dental implants helps prevent or reduce bone loss and the facial contour changes that result.

In addition to preserving the natural shape of the jawbone, dental implants provide a far more natural feel when speaking and chewing. There is no risk of dentures slipping or falling out so confidence is also increased.

Things to Consider

Dental implants are more expensive than dentures and because it is a surgical procedure, there is a healing process involved that can last from weeks to months. Most patients who have undergone tooth replacement with dental implants after wearing traditional dentures are very happy and report that permanent dentures feel the same as their natural teeth.
